Brit Hopes & Predictions

There aren't many award ceremonies that really capture my attention, but if I'm going to take an interest in any,  the Mercury Prize and the Brits will be the ones. I like music; I like British-ness; and I like James Corden, who happens to be presenting.  And since the meeting I had scheduled for tonight got cancelled, I'll definitely be watching on ITV from 8pm.

To get myself in the mood, I thought I'd take a look at the nominees and choose who I'd most like to win (in bold) and who I think is most likely to win (in italics).

Here goes...

British Breakthrough Act
  • Alt-J
  • Ben Howard
  • Jake Bugg
  • Jessie Ware
  • Rita Ora
This is the only category open to a public vote. It was a pretty impossible decision because I am completely in love with every one of the first four acts. I would be delighted if any of them won, but think that of them all Alt-J have the highest chance. Them, or Rita b'Ora.

British Female Solo Artist
  • Amy Winehouse
  • Bat for Lashes
  • Emeli Sande
  • Jessie Ware
  • Paloma Faith
I really hope that Jessie Ware wins this. Not only is her music brilliant (if you haven't heard her album already, you really should), but she just seems so humble that I think it would come as a real surprise. Also, I may have a bit of a girl crush. Admittedly, I'd also be pretty pleased if Bat for Lashes won, but I suspect that Ms. Sande is the most likely recipient. I'll look forward to the excitement of the local news if that's the case.

British Group
  • Alt-J
  • Mumford and Sons
  • Muse
  • One Direction
  • The XX
I really want Alt-J to win. I'd still be pleased if Mumford and Sons or The XX did. I think Mumford or One Direction (big respect to them for doing so well, but.. meh) are the most likely contenders.

British Live Act
  • Coldplay
  • Mumford and Sons
  • Muse
  • Rolling Stones
  • The Vaccines
I haven't seen any of these acts live so it's probably unfair of me to have picked anyone ..and I can't begin to guess who might actually win.

British Male Solo Artist
  • Ben Howard
  • Calvin Harris
  • Olly Murs
  • Plan B
  • Richard Hawley
I would love for Ben Howard (second choice = Plan B) to win this, but I don't think he stands much of a chance in this category. But, then again, I would have said that about Laura Marling the year she won female solo!

British Single
  • Adele – ‘Skyfall’
  • Alex Clare – ‘Too Close’
  • Coldplay & Rihanna – ‘Princess of China’
  • DJ Fresh feat. Rita Ora – ‘Hot Right Now’
  • Emeli Sande – ‘Next to Me’
  • Florence + The Machine – ‘Spectrum (Say My Name)’
  • James Arthur – ‘Impossible’
  • Jessie J – ‘Domino’
  • Labrinth feat. Emeli Sande – ‘Beneath Your Beautiful’
  • Olly Murs feat. Flo Rida – ‘Troublemaker’
  • Rita Ora feat. Tinie Tempah – ‘RIP’
  • Rizzle Kicks – ‘Mama Do the Hump’
  • Robbie Williams – ‘Candy’
  • Rudimental feat. John Newman – ‘Feel the Love’
  • Stooshe – ‘Black Heart’
I would love if Florence + the Machine, or even guilty please Jessie J, took this one. But it can surely only go to Adele and no one can argue that she doesn't deserve it!

International Female Solo
  • Alicia Keys
  • Cat Power
  • Lana Del Rey
  • Rihanna
  • Taylor Swift
Lana Del Rey, please. I think she stands a high chance, unless RiRi gets in the way.

International Group
  • Alabama Shakes
  • The Black Keys
  • FUN.
  • The Killers
  • The Script
I love Alabama Shakes. I don't know anyone else who loves Alabama Shakes. On that basis, I would hazard a guess that The Killers or, based on their Grammy success, The Black Keys might take it.

International Male Solo Artist
  • Bruce Springsteen
  • Frank Ocean
  • Gotye
  • Jack White
  • Michael Buble
Can someone please get Bruce Springsteen an award just for being Bruce Springsteen? Really though, I'll be very surprised if anyone other than Frank Ocean takes it.

Mastercard British Album of the Year
  • Alt-J – ‘An Awesome Wave’
  • Emeli Sande – ‘Our Version of Events’
  • Mumford and Sons – ‘Babel’
  • Paloma Faith – ‘Fall to Grace’
  • Plan B – ‘Ill Manors’
Choice one: Alt-J; choice two: Mumford and Sons; choice three: Plan B. Prediction? Emeli again. (Big up the Aberdeenshire massive!)

BRITs Global Success Award
Surely this is bound to go to Adele?

Now all we can really do is wait and see! (And, let's face it, it's hardly a lengthy wait.) In the meantime, I made a Spotify playlist full of nominees for you to check out:

Will you be watching? Who will you be rooting for?
