On the Radar

A list of the things i've been enjoying/reading/generally paying attention to this week:

  • Mumford & Sons' 'Babel
It seems like this has been on absolutely everyone's radar this week and rightly so. The new Mumford & Sons album is a beauty and has been on repeat in my house all week. i was a tiny bit gutted when tickets for their Dundee gig were sold out in the first ten minutes!

i also read an article about the band 'Preaching to the Masses' and filling an important gap in current culture, and another where Marcus Mumford denies any implied Christian beliefs and advocates a broader spirituality instead -- interesting.

  • SPICE Up Your Life
  • Nicole over at 'Oh My!' wrote about the 'SPICES' exercise her therapist introduced to her. It's a really simple tool to make sure you're practicing self-care socially, physically, intellectually, creatively, emotionally and spiritually, and working through it earlier in the week i found it surprisingly useful. It's good to pause and focus on these things sometimes.

  • Lady Gaga's 'Body Revolution
Unless you've been hiding under a rock all week, you're bound to have heard about this. After being slated in the media for allegedly gaining a bit of weight, Lady Gaga launched her 'Body Revolution' by posting a photo of herself in her underwear with the caption "Bulimia and anorexia since I was 15," encouraging her fans to do the same and to "be brave and celebrate your 'perceived flaws'."

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing - largely explained here (for) and here (against). I've never been much of a Gaga fan and so maybe I'm just being cynical, but it does concern me that her fans are being encouraged to make themselves so vulnerable, both by posting scantily clad pictures of themselves online, and by investing themselves into what may, later, turn out to be nothing but a marketing scheme. That said, if it's entirely genuine then it's a great message and good on her for getting people talking about these things.

  • 'Why Christians Should Stop Opposing Gay Marriage' by Becca Rose, over at HelloGiggles
I just thought this was a sensitively written piece which raised a couple of interesting questions/points.

  • 'Painting a Future..'
Last but not least, photographer Jeremy Cowart is over in Uganda at the moment, using art-therapy with victims of the LRA from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to help them tell their stories. He's been sharing some of his journey on Facebook and Twitter, telling us about some of the people he's working with: from former child soldiers and top commanders, to a woman who was married to Joseph Kony for three years.
Very much looking forward to seeing the artwork they've created together.

So there we go.
What's been on your radar this week?
