There's been lots going on over the last few weeks so I feel pretty out of touch with Planet Internet, but here are a few mental health pieces that caught my attention...
- Sam Finch writes about 'Why I'm Done Being a 'Good' Mentally Ill Person'.
- Comedian Sahil Shah writes about 'Depression, Life's Stupidest Lemon'.
- The World Health Organisation have also found that depression is now "the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide."
- They made it the focus of this year's World Health Day with their 'Let's Talk' campaign.
- SAMH and the VSA are currently running their Open Up campaign, encouraging people in the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire area to talk more about their mental health. Here's a wee piece about it in the PandJ.
- This article reminds us that, while talking is a helpful and important "protective factor," it is "no substitute for offering real help."
- The brave @DrEm_79 has been sharing on Twitter what it's like when that help is not available.
- The National Union of Students (Scotland) have been raising concerns about the number of people dropping out of their studies due to mental health crises.
- The Scottish Government have announced their new 10 year mental health strategy.
- SAMH's public affairs manager gave this response, while a number of children and mental health charities are concerned that the strategy is "not good enough."
- The University of Aberdeen are conducting a trial through NHS Highlands, looking at the use of online psychiatric assessments.
- They're also still working on this piece of research into the role of eye movement tracking in detecting psychiatric disorders, which I'm looking forward to participating in next week.
- And this upcoming screening of 'Mad to be Normal' (about Scottish psychiatrist R.D. Laing) is set to take place at Belmont Filmhouse on April 18th - followed by a Q and A with its director - and looks really interesting.
